Getachew Tesfaye GTB Beyene

Dr. Getachew Tesfaye Beyene is a Senior Researcher at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), Ethiopia, within the Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases Research Directorate. He earned his Ph.D. in Medicine and Health Sciences from the University of Oslo, Norway, in 2017. He also holds an MSc degree in Medical Microbiology from Addis Ababa University, 2008. His research focuses on infectious diseases, Diagnostics, and antimicrobial resistance, with a particular emphasis on meningitis diagnostics and surveillance. Dr. Getachew is dedicated to improving patient management by developing rapid molecular diagnostic tools that use blood samples as a less invasive alternative to cerebrospinal fluid, enabling point-of-care testing. He also leads surveillance studies to track the evolving epidemiology of meningitis following the introduction of the Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A vaccine. Using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches, his work explores diagnostic biomarkers and previously uncharacterized meningitis pathogens, profiles resistance genes, and investigates transcriptional mechanisms in pathogens, the microbiome, and the host.
