Fiona Mutesi Magololo
Dr. Magololo Mutesi Fiona is a medical doctor and clinical microbiologist from Makerere University, Uganda, with programmatic and research expertise in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), antibiotic stewardship, and host-pathogen interactions. As a research scientist at The Infectious Diseases Institute, she has led studies on antibiotic misuse among persons living with HIV and their health workers in Kampala, alongside broader work on prescribing practices in Mulago hospital. Her professional background includes clinical, laboratory and leadership roles, through which she gained extensive experience in programs and research strategy and technical management. In 2024, she was awarded research funding from the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and the NIH-Fogarty International MITHU program training award. She recently implemented a quality improvement study to improve antimicrobial stewardship at Mulago Hospital, with funding from the Wellcome Trust, through CAMO-Net. Her scientific interests centre on laboratory-based AMR surveillance, in-hospital and community-based antimicrobial resistance surveillance and stewardship programs, host-pathogen interactions with the microbiome and behavioural change interventions to promote rational antibiotic use in an integrative one health model to holistically control antimicrobial resistance.
