MOHAMMED ABUL KALAM, PhD, MPH, MSc, MA, MBBS Senior Physician | Epidemiologist | Medical Sociologist Bangladesh Dr. Mohammed Abul Kalam is a senior public health professional with over 40 years of experience in both public and private sectors in Bangladesh. He has served in leadership roles as a physician, epidemiologist, and medical sociologist, with a strong focus on infectious diseases and health systems strengthening in resource-constrained settings. He is the Founder of the Department of Medical Sociology at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research (IEDCR), under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Bangladesh—the first department of its kind in Bangladesh and the Asian region—integrating social and behavioral sciences into national disease control strategies. His research focuses on STIs/ HIV, hepatitis C (HCV), substance use, behavioral epidemiology, harm reduction, and implementation research. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications and presented at over 200 international conferences. He is also the author of two books, including Social Science Research in Health in Bangladesh: An Ethical Guideline (Bilingual) and Demography. Since 2002, he has served as an external PhD examiner. Dr. Kalam has published 389 op-eds in national English-language daily newspapers on public health, population, climate change, and development issues.
