The three pillars of infectious disease prevention—diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines— will be discussed in the context of controlling and preventing gonococcal infections. Recent advances in diagnostics include the development of point-of-care (POC) tests, self-collection options both in clinic and at home, and over the counter (OTC) testing for at-home use. Therapeutic innovations feature Zoliflodacin, a first-in-class antibiotic for uncomplicated gonorrhea, approved by the FDA in December 2025. The importance of vaccines is highlighted, particularly in the context of increasing antibiotic resistance. Encouragingly, several vaccines for gonorrhea are advancing through the product development pipeline.
